Solar Is Getting Cheaper — But the Grid Is Becoming More Important Solar power is becoming increasingly affordable, and global solar capacity continues to grow at an unprecedented pace. In 2025 alone, more than 600 GW of new solar PV capacity was added worldwide, bringing total installed solar capacity to around 2.8 TW. At the same time, solar module prices fell by roughly 50% between 2023 and 2025. However, cheaper solar does not automatically mean a cheaper or simpler power system. As more distributed solar generation is connected to the grid, power networks need to manage increasingly complex operating conditions, including two-way power flows, voltage fluctuations, grid congestion and changing load profiles. Grid connection is becoming one of the key challenges for renewable energy development. Thousands of gigawatts of renewable energy, energy storage and large-load projects are currently waiting for grid connection, highlighting the growing gap between renewable energy development and grid infrastructure. At the same time, investment in electricity grids will need to increase significantly to support the continued growth of renewable energy and electrification. From our perspective, this creates significant opportunities for the power equipment industry. As renewable energy continues to expand, demand will also increase for: • Distribution and power transformers • Medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear • Energy storage systems • Grid connection equipment • Power quality and voltage regulation solutions • Substation and power distribution equipment Transformers and switchgear play an essential role in connecting renewable generation to distribution and transmission networks. Energy storage can also help balance fluctuating renewable generation and improve the flexibility of modern power systems. The future energy system will not depend on solar power alone. It will also depend on the infrastructure that connects, manages and distributes that power safely and efficiently. Solar energy may continue to get cheaper. But the value of a stronger, smarter and more flexible grid is only increasing. For power equipment manufacturers, this means the renewable energy transition is not only an opportunity in generation — it is also a growing opportunity in the grid.
