BESS Is Becoming Grid Infrastructure: The Growing Demand for Electrical Equipment

Utility-scale battery energy storage is rapidly scaling from hundreds of MWh to multiple GWh, creating growing demand not only for batteries and PCS, but also for transformers, MV switchgear, auxiliary power systems, protection and control equipment, and other grid connection infrastructure.

BESS Is Becoming Grid Infrastructure: The Growing Demand for Electrical Equipment

Industry News

According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, around 6.5 GW / 20.9 GWh of utility-scale battery storage came online globally in August, with Saudi Arabia accounting for roughly one-fifth of the total. But the more important story may not be the number itself. It is how the role of battery energy storage is changing. From Renewable Add-On to Grid Infrastructure A few years ago, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) were often discussed as an add-on to renewable energy — something installed alongside solar or wind projects. Today, that definition is becoming increasingly outdated. As projects move from hundreds of MWh to multiple GWh, battery storage is becoming an increasingly important part of the power system itself. Large-scale BESS projects can support renewable integration, peak management, grid flexibility, and other power-system applications. As deployment grows, the electrical infrastructure required around these systems becomes increasingly important. A BESS Project Is More Than Batteries and PCS Behind every large-scale BESS project, there is much more than battery cells and PCS. The complete electrical system may include:Power transformers, Medium-voltage switchgear, Auxiliary transformers, LV distribution systems, Protection and control systems, Monitoring and communication systems, Grid connection equipment,Cables and other electrical infrastructure This means that the expansion of the energy storage market is also creating new requirements for the wider electrical equipment supply chain. Where the Next Opportunity May Be The next stage of the storage market will not only be about battery technology and energy density. It will also be about how efficiently and reliably the entire electrical system around the BESS can be designed, manufactured, integrated, and connected to the grid. For companies in the power equipment industry, this represents an important area of market development. Transformers, MV switchgear, auxiliary power equipment, protection systems, and other electrical products are becoming increasingly connected to the growth of utility-scale energy storage. Storage Is Becoming Part of the Grid Battery energy storage is no longer simply a niche technology installed alongside renewable generation. As projects continue to scale, BESS is becoming an increasingly important component of modern grid infrastructure. For manufacturers and suppliers of power equipment, understanding this shift means looking beyond the battery itself — and focusing on the complete electrical system required to connect, protect, control, and operate large-scale energy storage projects. The growth of BESS is not only an energy-storage story. It is also an electrical infrastructure story.
